Slicing Cake: Lower Secondary Mathematics Competition Question

Given a circular sponge cake, what is the maximum number of pieces that can be made with just 4 cuts?

A cut with a sharp knife is a flat plane which, considered on its own, would split the cake into two pieces. You are also not allowed to rearrange the cake pieces between cuts.

You may wish to try the problem with 3 cuts first.
